Delicious and easy to make, this easy baked eggs recipe with cheese and smoked ham will up your breakfast game.
I’m not sure if it is me living vicariously through my kids, but over the last few months, I have been subtly (blatantly) been getting my kids accustomed to hearing other languages. Specifically French and German. It is not because I am fluent in either, far from it. Partly it is because I wish I were fluent, but also because I have really come to love visiting those countries (Austria too!).
While I know that most of our family trips overseas will always be to Nova Scotia, with Europe so close I am determined to ensure my kids get to experience different countries and cultures. Yes, the food, but also the language. That is why I have managed to earn the ire of D recently for switching the language in Netflix to French. He calls it annoying, I call it immersive. We disagree.
In any case, with the holiday season ending, it reminded me of one trip myself and D took pre-kids to Paris. There is something lovely about walking the streets of Paris, it is a great mixture of quaint and opulence side by side. The markets, well they are very French. At some point during this winter trip, we sat down at a Brasserie and ordered some lunch. Given I had been walking for a whole morning I ordered some baked eggs. This simple and easy baked eggs recipe was amazing. Thick ham, buttery eggs with some good French cheese mixed in. I devoured the whole pot.
This simple and easy baked eggs recipe was amazing.
When I came back home I was intent on recreating this dish, and it has been a go-to French comfort food ever since. As there are so few ingredients, the key is to get top quality of each. The best eggs, the best thick cut ham, the best hard cheese, and even the best butter.
Plus this baked eggs recipe is so easy to prepare. You start with a casserole pot with a lid (also known as a Dutch Oven) and butter the inside. Then you layer your ham slices with some shredded cheese (I went with a mixture of cheddar and gruyere), followed by cracking in some fresh eggs. Bake it for 8-12 minutes and voila! An easy baked eggs recipe, ready to serve.
Now a few years ago I bought some mini dutch ovens to go with my bigger ones for meals. If you’re looking to invest, I have to say Le Creuset is a brilliant option. However, it’s worth looking around to find one that works for your kitchen. They are an absolute staple in our household.
As an added bonus, both Thing 1 and 2, and even D gobbled these down when they get them on their plate. The immersion is starting to work!
Pairing
Drinks – Some milk or tea

Switching your Netflix language is brilliant! This egg dish looks awesome. I have gruyere and ham in the house so I think I’ll have to have a nice breakfast this week!

They say that most kids easily absorb languages (Like a sponge), and they can easily switch between languages as well. So that’s a perfect time for this immersion. I wish I could learn another language, but I need to handle English first haha (Indeed, many years ago, basically last century, I tried to tackle Finnish and Dutch, and that wasn’t very successful, so probably I just don’t have this talent). Well at least I have some culinary skills – probably I can handle these baked eggs 🙂 The dish does sound and look delicious!

Hah! I love that Thing 1 and Thing 2 eating these baked eggs is proof that your immersion tactic is working. 🙂 I absolutely applaud what you are doing! I only know Latin when it comes to foreign languages, and well that doesn’t help a whole lot. (Unless I’m trying to have a chat with the Pope!) To be fair, Latin does give me a lot of clues when it comes to other languages, but I wish I could speak a modern language. Keep on keeping on! Also, these cheesy baked eggs sound incredible! I make cheesy scrambled eggs on toast for lunch quite often, but now I need to try baking ’em instead. Yum!

Cheese, eggs, ham, butter….there’s absolutely no going wrong here! This, lots of coffee and some toast and I call that one awesome breakfast (or lunch or dinner 😉 ) .
