Baked chocolate donuts are a delicious treat that needs just 10 minutes prep time. Make them even more special with a drizzle of icing and crushed candy cane.

The other day, I picked up my oldest from school. As he ran out the door, rather than saying ‘hi dad!’ he instead came running out claiming it was donut Friday and that it was vital that we make donuts. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure where he got this idea, but a good idea is a good idea.

Now, I love a good doughnut, I’ve even made them before. However, I don’t like deep-frying food in my kitchen. Especially when I have my kids around. So, instead, I turned to tried and tested my baked chocolate donut recipe. Not too heavy, plenty chocolaty, and brilliant with a drizzle of icing and crushed candy canes.

What do you need to make baked chocolate donuts

  • 1 Egg
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • White sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Milk
  • Plain flour
  • Coco Powder
  • Greek Yogurt

How do you make baked chocolate donuts

  • Preheat oven to 350F, grease your donut baking sheet with melted butter. Whisk together all the dry ingredients and set aside. Mix the sugars with eggs, 2 Tbps of the butter and all the other wet ingredients.
  • Slowly add the dried ingredients to the wet, and mix until combined. Then spoon into the doughnut tins. Bake these for 10-15min.
  • Let cool in the pan for 5-10min, and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once completely cool, drizzle with vanilla icing and crushed candy canes!

What goes well with this baked chocolate donut recipe

  • Tourtière!
  • Roasted butternut squash salad
  • Gluhwein
  • Black Forest Biscotti – Food Meanderings

Drinks

Moscow mule, or frankly a good cup of coffee!

You know we have a donut tin that’s gathering dust in a cabinet somewhere as I’ve not thought of baking donuts in ages. But after see the images of your baked chocolate donuts I’m motivated. Oh and I so agree, a good warm hand pie followed by a chocolate donut would make a great pair.
Also loved the image with the hand reaching in. Happy Holidays.

Donut Friday? I’ve never heard of that one, either…but like you I’m totally on board with this concept. Every Friday should be donut Friday! While we will fry stuff occasionally around here, I’m with ya on the baking note. Baked donuts can be quite delicious, and these chocolate ones look awesome! Perfect snack for Santa on Christmas Eve!

I’m loving the sound of donut Friday! And I agree, baking is so much better than frying. Time to pull out my mini donut pan I think! These look wonderful. Hope you’ve had a wonderful Christmas, Matt, and wishing you a very happy New Year!
